Kick-off Meeting of the BIOntier European project

The kick-off meeting of the BIOntier project (BreakIng FrOntiers in sustainable and circular biocomposites with high performance for multi-sector applications) was held in mid-October in Heraklion (Crete, Greece). The project, funded by the European Union's Horizon Europe programme, is made up of a consortium of 25 entities from 12 countries. BCMaterials is one of several Basque partners in the project, along with Tecnalia and Graphenea.
The main objective of the BIOntier project is the design, development and scalable manufacturing of the next generation of bio-based composites (BioC). Through the participation of agents throughout the value chain, the aim is to obtain profitable, sustainable, lightweight and recyclable compounds, improving their thermal, mechanical and chemical properties, as well as their functionalities: for example, resistance to corrosion - chemical and fire -, hardness and impact resistance, resistance to high temperatures, structural health control, etc.
BIOntier will develop 6 use cases that will support future technologies for different sectors such as automotive, aerospace, energy (hydrogen economy) and water treatment.
