Eric Hill, New Ikerbasque Research Associate Professor

We are glad to welcome Eric H. Hill as a new Ikerbasque Research Associate Professor at BCMaterials.

Eric obtained a B.S. in Chemistry at Southern Oregon University in 2009, and a Ph.D. at the University of New Mexico in 2014 focusing on the photochemistry and self-assembly of p-phenylene ethynylenes. In his postdoctoral stay with Luis M. Liz-Marzán (CIC-biomaGUNE) he studied the plasmonic monitoring of bacterial communication and developed concepts about shape-templated colloidal growth as a Juan de la Cierva fellow (2015-2017). He then joined the group of Yuebing Zheng (UT Austin) for 7 months, developing opto-thermophoretic trapping techniques before starting his own group as a MOPGA-GRI Laureate at the Technical University of Hamburg (2018-2020). He then moved his group to the University of Hamburg as a CUI “Young Investigator Group Leader” (2020-2025).

His research focuses on the colloidal assembly and synthesis of nanomaterials. The main research thrusts are:
- Understanding colloidal interactions of nanomaterials at interfaces to advance and discover new optically-driven patterning techniques, for the directed assembly of functional materials
- Templating colloidal inorganic synthesis and synthetic organic chemistry at specific nanomaterial interfaces for advancing applications in energy, sensing, and optoelectronics.
