BCMaterials director invited speaker at TMS 2015
TMS2015 Jose Manuel Barandiaran will present the latest studies by neutron and synchrotron techniques during his invited talk @ TMS 2015 on March 17th. Magnetic Studies in Shape Memory Alloys by Neutron and Synchrotron Techniques: Jose Manuel Barandiaran1; Volodymyr Chernenko1; Maria Luisa Fernandez-Gubieda1; Patricia lazpita1; Akio Kimura2; 1BCMaterials and UPV/EHU; 2Hiroshima University Magnetic structure and properties of Magnetic and Metamagnetic Shape memory Alloys are on the base of their interesting properties and are object of study by all kind of advanced experimental and theoretical methods. In Metamagnetic alloys, the martensite is non magnetic and the large change of magnetization at the martensitic transition allows the transition itself to be induced by magnetic field. Here we present a summary of recent experiments with polarized neutron diffraction and X ray Circular Magnetic Dichroism (XCMD). While Neutrons are sensitive to the crystallographic position of the magnetic moments, XCMD is sensitive to the atomic species carrying the magnetic moment. Both techniques are, therefore, fully complementary. Magnetism is well described by a localized moment mainly concentrated at the Mn atoms. However, either Ferro or AntiFerromagnetic cupling is present between magnetic atoms. That explains the different behavior of Ferro- and Meta- Magnetic Shape Memory Alloys.
