Prof. Antonio Hernando talk: "Onset of room temperature ferromagnetism in pure metals by plastic deformation"

Prof. Antonio Hernando from the Complutense University of Madrid and director of the "Salvador Velayos" Applied Magnetism Institute will give a talk at the Faculty of Science and Technology, about "Onset of room temperature ferromagnetism in pure metals by plastic deformation"
Plastic deformation may trigger a spontaneous magnetization at ambient temperature in pure paramagnetic metals such as zirconium, titanium and magnesium. We propose that the lattice distortions associated with dislocations promote the emergence of ferromagnetism at the nanometric scale. Evidence has been found in pure Zr, which exhibits Pauli paramagnetism in the undeformed state, and increasing deformation produces a
decrease in the susceptibility and appearance of hysteresis.
