  • Postdoctoral Researcher – Biodegradable battery ecodesign and characterizationPost-doctoral researcher

    Reference:2024-05

    Deadline:

    Status: Open

The upcoming wave of power hungry Internet-of-Things (IoT) sensing nodes will strongly increase the primary battery demand in the near future thus aggravating the environmental impact associated to its production and the generation of waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) after its operation lifetime.
This project proposes to develop a new battery concept based on the principles of ecodesign and circular economy. Thus, batteries will be designed and fabricated to ensure an optimal use of resources while reducing their potential environmental impact throughout their whole life cycle. In this way, the project aims to change the current paradigm of portable batteries from a ‘one-size-fits-all’ to a new ´tailor-made’ model where batteries are ecodesigned to fit the life cycle of the device to be powered.

Over the last decade, a novel class of magnetic metamaterials appeared related as artificial analogues to spin-ice materials, rare-earth titanate materials where the frustration between magnetic moments leads to a playground of fundamental physics studies. These novel materials, dubbed artificial spin ices (ASIs), made of interacting elongated nanomagnets, have emerged as a fertile ground for the study and discovery of novel phenomena not present in natural magnetic materials, bound to a strong inspiration for potential applications.

The field of ASIs is currently reaching levels of maturity that bring the state-of-the-art to a position where different pathways emerge as natural alleys for the field to evolve into. In particular, pushing the limits of the nanofabrication skills of the ASIs will eventually allow these systems to be used as playgrounds to prove quantum effects, being this ground-breaking approach the issue of study of the present project.

The present PhD thesis will be developed jointly by research groups from BCMaterials, the Basque Centre for Materials, Applications and Nanostructures, and the University of the Basque Country.

  • Post-doctoral position: A coordination Chemistry Approach for Quantum ComputersPost-doctoral researcher

    Reference:2023-06

    Deadline:

    Status: Resolved

BCMaterials, Basque Center for Materials, Applications and Nanostructures, is an autonomous research center launched in June 2012 by Ikerbasque, the Basque Foundation for Science and the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU) as a research center for Materials, Applications and Nanostructures. The center is included in the BERC’s (Basque Excellence Research Centers) network and its mission is to generate knowledge on the generation of new materials, turning this knowledge into (multi)functional solutions and devices for the benefit of society.

Digital technology has intimately invaded our modern life for the last three decades. The recent development of nomadic electronics is pushing the industry to create improved and smaller devices, which could store and manipulate the enormous quantity of data we are producing. But there is one technological limitation dictated by the Moore’s Law: computers tend to double in speed and/or halve in size every two years to meet market demand. With the current available technology, computer manufacturers will soon be reaching the physical limits for which the inorganic magnetic materials can be used.

A potential solution to this large problem can be driven by coordination chemistry, a scientific domain that studies hybrid organic-inorganic materials that range from discrete molecules (i.e., Single-Molecule Magnets (SMMs) to 1D (i.e., Single-Chain Magnets (SCMs)) and 2D and 3D networks (i.e., Coordination polymers or Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs)). In particular, SMMs display useful properties at the molecular level. Their ability to store information at a nanometric scale makes them ideal candidates for future information storage devices, as they offer an ultra-high information storage density and due to their intricate quantum properties, they can also be used as qubits for future quantum computers.

While both fields have conquered remarkable landmarks in the past years, longer blocking temperatures (the current record values are close to the boiling point of nitrogen) and quantum coherence times are still required, as well as methodologies to scale-them up and implement them in devices. In this project, we will focus on the second type of systems and we will synthesize improved qubits and deposit them in targeted surfaces to create prototypes for Quantum Computing, which is mandatory to eventually cross the bridge between fundamental science and technological applications.

We are looking for a post doctorate level researcher in the area of MOFs. The contract will be until the end of the project, which has an estimated duration of 1 year.

Colorectal cancer is the second tumor most frequent in women and the second in men. As more active drugs are not stable under physiological conditions different strategies have been developed to solve this problem: (a) use derivatives of the active principle that, when degraded in the body give rise to its release, (b) incorporate the active principle in a porous material that prevent its degradation and allow a controlled release. Our proposal focuses on this second approach, using a porous matrix with fixed pore sizes that allow controlled drug release. These materials, called “metal-organic frameworks, MOFs”, are formed by the combination of a metallic center and bridging organic molecules that join them. The combinations are practically infinite, which allows tailoring their pore sizes and reactivity. They capture high amounts of drugs, with relatively slow-release kinetics and time-spaced dosing. In addition, the MOFs can be designed with pores that fit the molecular dimensions of the drugs, protecting them from their degradation by biological agents and/or by aggressive chemical.

  • Pre-doctoral position: Gel electrolytes based on renewably sourced polymers for environmentally sustainable batteriesPre-doctoral researcher

    Reference:2022-22

The center is included in the BERC’s (Basque Excellence Research Centers) network and its mission is to generate knowledge on the new generation of materials, turning this knowledge into (multi)functional solutions and devices for the benefit of society.
The development of efficient, safe and environmentally friendly energy storage systems is considered as one of the key aspects to move towards a more sustainable society, in environmental terms. Among the different energy storage systems currently available, rechargeable batteries in general, and lithium-ion secondary batteries (LIBs) in particular, are of particular relevance. However, there are a wide variety of critical aspects related to the use of this type of batteries, such as the scarcity of lithium and other raw materials used (cobalt, natural graphite...), their high cost of extraction combined with geopolitical conflicts, and the safety issues inherent to this technology (the risk of explosion). It is therefore essential to work on the search for alternative battery systems that use environmentally sustainable materials and are safer, without losing storage capacity.
In this context, sodium-ion batteries (NIB) and zinc-ion batteries (ZIB) have aroused great interest in energy storage applications due to the natural abundance of sodium and zinc, their lower cost and their adequate redox potential, which allows obtaining batteries with acceptable levels of energy density. However, the technology of NIBs and ZIBs still needs to be further developed to obtain batteries that are competitive with LIBs.
Therefore, this project aims to develop a new generation of electrolytes in gel form based on renewable polymers such as cellulose, chitin, agarose or carrageenans. Similar to conventional systems, these biopolymers can ensure good electrical insulation between the cathode and the anode but at the same time allow an efficient ion exchange between them. For this purpose, the biopolymers will be processed to make them suitable for 2D printing techniques. In addition, additive manufacturing by 2D printing offers low production costs, the ability for complex designs and applicability on flexible substrates, thus also enabling the development of mechanically flexible batteries, which are increasingly in demand in areas such as wearable electronics or point-of-care diagnostics. Such gels will also provide greater battery safety by preventing leakage of the liquid electrolyte. Once the electrolytes have been optimized, they will be implemented in Na and Zn cells to evaluate their possible application in real energy storage systems. The pre-doctoral position is framed within the research areas of Active and smart materials of BCMaterials.

  • Pre-doctoral position: Encoding of Metal-Organic Frameworks for the precise inmobilization of metal-ionsPre-doctoral researcher

    Reference:2022-21

    Deadline:

    Status: Resolved

The design of materials able to immobilize metal-ions in a selective and precise manner is a challenge with deep technological implications in a variety of areas: highly selective adsorbents, single-atom bioinspired catalysts, or ionic conductors, among others. Today, Metal-Organic Framework (MOF) porous materials are placed in a forefront position to face this challenge because of their chemical and structural versatility. Starting from porous MOFs with known porosity metrics and functionalization possibilities, we will explore the possibility to encode natural and synthetic amino acids, peptides and bio-radicals like functions within their structure.
This strategy of the MOF´s pore space funtionalization will open the perspective not only to develop highly selective sorbents to capture specific metal ions from complex mixtures (i.e. polluted waters, acid leachates…), but to control their coordination environment, and in turn, shape the electro, optic and catalytic properties of the metal-ions installed within the porous material. Once the fundamental understanding of the precise metal-ions immobilization has been understood, the adsorptive and catalytic properties of the materials will be tested for: (i) the selective recovery of Co and rare earth elements from complex acid leachates obtained from mining and biomining activities, and (ii) as bioinspired catalysts able to deploy the sequential transformation of alcohols in synthetic fuels.
The pre-doctoral position is framed within the research areas of Smart materials of the BCMaterials. The research topic for this project targets the development of advanced MOFs with application in environmental science and green energy generation.

The center is included in the BERC’s (Basque Excellence Research Centers) network and its mission is to generate knowledge on the new generation of materials, turning this knowledge into (multi)functional solutions and devices for the benefit of society. Demand on highly efficient energy storage and environmental remediation systems are two of the cornerstone challenges that society will face during the following decade. Polymer-based composites are actively being studied nowadays to tackle these problems. A suitable strategy for improving those systems rely on the inclusion of microporous materials as active fillers, such as metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), leading to composites functional tunning and an overall improvement of the performance of the composites both in terms of batteries robustness or the efficiency of the membranes for water remediation. Nevertheless, there is still a lack of understanding of what is the actual mechanism that make this possible. Thus, further research is needed to clarify which of the nanofiller´s characteristics (e.g. microporosity, composition of the initial building blocks) are key to modulate the porous or dense structure of the polymer host matrix, as well as its functional performance. Structural characterization of such composites at nanoscale is key to understand the organization of their components and improve the performance. The pre-doctoral position is framed within the research areas of Smart materials and Neutrons science of the BCMaterials. The research topic for this project targets the development of polymer-based composites based on MOFs nanoparticles with application in fields of battery and environmental science.

  • Post-Doc position for Modeling electric fields in metal-organic frameworksPost-doctoral researcher

    Reference:2022-07

    Deadline:

    Status: Resolved

The synthesis and degradation of nearly all components of living systems are controlled by enzymes. Enzymes can accelerate the rate of biosynthetic processes to a remarkable degree while retaining a high level of specificity. We aim to understand the origin(s) of this rate enhancement by creating synthetic enzyme mimics. Our underlying hypothesis is that the active site elements of enzymes are organized to create large electric fields that interact noncovalently with the substrate bonds undergoing charge displacement during catalysis. If the field is large and oriented correctly, this interaction can make a substantial contribution to lowering the transition state free energy and accelerating the reaction. This concept is called electrostatic catalysis, and while some computational and experimental evidence exists to support this hypothesis, the non-covalent interactions at the heart of this concept have not been recapitulated or their fields measured in synthetic systems. This project is about using metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) to precisely install the key functional groups of molecules in apposition to each other, the electric fields created by their non-covalent interactions will be measured for the first time. The synthetic scaffold offers a tremendous diversity of chemical functionality; specific MOF structures that mimic a wide range of enzyme active site geometries that lead to diverse function.

  • PhD position on the electric manipulation of domain walls in magnetic nanostructuresPost-doctoral researcher

    Reference:2022-04

    Deadline:

    Status: Resolved

Magnetic domain walls (DWs) are on the basis of potential applications in the field of spintronics. On one hand, DWs have been proposed as new logic architectures that can substitute currently employed random access memories based on semiconductors. Some of the key advantages DWs offer are their design flexibility, high density and the non-volatile character of the stored information. On the other hand, the manipulation of DWs in micro and nanowires leads to multiple resistive equilibrium states, a key property that makes them ideal candidates to be employed in neuromorphic computing. The electric manipulation of DWs is, therefore, a crucial aspect in order to control data storage, the interconnectivity of logic circuits and the pinning of well defined magnetic configurations and equilibrium states. The present PhD thesis will be developed jointly by research groups from BCMaterials, the Basque centre for materials, applications and nanostructures, and the University of the Basque Country.

  • Predoctoral position design of new conductive MOFPre-doctoral researcher

    Reference:2020-43

    Deadline:

    Status: Resolved

We propose a 9 months contract.

The main goal of this project is to design, synthetize and characterize new conductive MOFs to apply them for technological devices and energy storage systems, in particular, transistors and supercapacitors.

Generally, we aim to synthesize 3D conductive MOFs with an isotropic conduction behaviour, which is essential for practical applications. Furthermore, we wish to reach a more in-depth understanding of the electronic properties of these materials via EPR spectroscopy.

Finally, we will work on one of the challenging tasks in MOF research such as processability. Specifically, we aim to obtain uniform thin films from the conductive MOF powders to enable
    the MOF-based technological applications.

To reach this goal, we will initially synthesize various organic linkers. As a second step, we will fully characterize the synthesized MOF structures employing NMR, IR, UV-Vis, SEM, TEM, XRD, and EPR techniques.

Further, we will try different methods for MOF thin film formation with consequent measurement and investigation of the optoelectronic properties of the MOF thin films and determine the best approach to form uniform conductive MOF thin films.

Finally, to prove the concept, we will fabricate MOF-based thin films transistors and evaluate their performance by I/V characteristics, Ion/Ioff ratio, mobility.

  • Integration of multifunctional materials for biodetection in microfluidic platforms

    Reference:2020-40

    Deadline:

    Status: Resolved

BCMaterials micro- and nanodevices group, located at the UPV/EHU Science Park in Leioa, in collaboration with the Microfluidics Cluster UPV/EHU of the University of the Basque Country, based in Vitoria-Gasteiz, are seeking to fund a PhD program in microfluidic point of care devices, starting in September 2020.

Microfluidics enables the control and management of very small liquid volumes, typically in the nanolitre to the microliter range, through micron-sized channels and structures. This is ideally suited for the analysis of biological samples, where sample volumes are strictly limited for reasons of safety and patient comfort. Thus, point-of-care analytical devices seek to achieve high sensitivities and rapid response times, and to meet high-reliability standards.

Materials and manufacturing are essential aspects of this PhD project, which aims to develop new microfluidic platforms relying on multifunctional and responsive materials to integrate new functionalities while simplifying their design and construction, as well as the instrumentation needs. Bioanalytical devices are inherently two-part systems. They combine a reactive, disposable part, where the sample is processed, and the detection reaction takes place, and either a portable or benchtop equipment, which actuates on the disposable part, acquires and processes the detectors’ signal and transforms it into manageable data. The disposable part needs to be extremely cost-effective for these systems to make commercial sense. However, the complexity and relatively high cost of these systems have been a limiting factor until now. This PhD program addresses these long-standing issues and will take innovative approaches to the production of new devices, so that they are both cost-effective and robust. We will develop components and systems able to perform multi-parametric detection of different biomarkers of interest in health, sports and work safety, using both optical and electrochemical techniques. Moreover, eco-design principles will guide materials selection to ensure alignment with the circular economy concept and the emerging environmental EU regulations.

Throughout this project, the successful candidate will study the behaviour of different multifunctional materials at the micro-scale, and will design and develop microfluidic detection systems using a number of design and manufacturing techniques, including rapid prototyping and clean room photolithographic processes.

This research area is strongly interdisciplinary and finds application across all scientific areas. Besides, these technologies have the potential to develop very high-value new commercial products that can reach and transform society.

  • PhD Position: Modulating protein absorption and cell response on electroresponsive scaffolds for bone cancer treatmentPost-doctoral researcher

    Reference:2020-38

    Deadline:

    Status: Resolved

The interaction of cancerous cells with their microenvironment is of crucial importace for the progression of primary tumors and must therefore be taken into account to develop suitable treatment approaches and cure strategies. Osteosarcoma is a rare but fatal disease that mainly affects long bones of the extremities of children and young adults. Studies suggest that its malignancy and metastatic tendency are directly related to the environmental signal perceived by neoplastic cells, including physical and biochemical ones. Among the most important physical stimuli present in the bone microenvironment are electromechanical stimuli, which are known to influence tissue repair and regeneration through their effect on bone-resident cells. With this in mind, in the present project we will analyze the effect of bioelectric signals analogous to those found in native bone on the behaviour of osteosarcoma cells. To this end, we will use materials that convert the mechanical forces acting on them into electrical signals (so-called piezoelectric materials), and will study the deposition of extracellular matrix elements and cells response in terms of proliferation, migration, differentiationand regulation of signalling pathways. As main outcomes, the project will provide a new paradigm in osteosarcoma biology and enable the development of smart biomaterials for the replacement of diseased bone and reconstruction of functional limbs. Properties such as piezoelectricity, magnetostriction, magnetoelectricity, photo- and magneto-thermia, and pyroelectricity among others, are used in smart materials that present a stimulus-responsive 4D response. Of particular importance are the materials designed for biomedical purposes that can generate physically active microenvironments. The generated physical stimuli of those microenvironments have a profound effect on cell functions (growth/inhibition, migration, differentiation, signaling, etc.) and have enormous potential in applications ranging from tissue engineering, antibacterial surfaces, or cancer therapies (1, 2). Moreover, those materials can be highly enhanced by the use of multicomponent nanoparticles that increase the range of stimuli and provide novel functionalities(3, 4).
