Multifunctional materials for conformable electronics


Today’s electronics market requires flexible applications, where electronic devices must be integrated into wearable components. To achieve integration, devices require conformability towards specific shape. Further, circular economy consideration recommend the use of environmental friendly materials. Therefore, a new generation of electronic materials has to be developed, taking into consideration the aforementioned needs. One of the most promising technologies to meet such requirements accomplishes printed electronics. However, this field still has a lack of environmental friendlier printable and conformable materials: conductive, dielectric and magnetic must be developed with suitable adhesion, conformability and functional response, which must be achieved in a nanoparticle free approach. These new functional inks will allow the development of new of types of devices, which can monitor our health, implement touch or sound response technologies in specific environments


The following techniques, instruments and facilities will be used:


Multidisciplinary approach including materials design, processing, characterization and device integration.


The following tasks will be performed:


  1. Development of advanced materials compatible both with sensing applications and conformability
  2. Fabrication and implementation of prototypes using conformable techniques
  3. Morphological, structural, electrical and functional characterization


BCMaterials offers a scholarship to master students for the master thesis to be done at BCMaterials, for a total amount of 600 EUR per month for up to 5 months, in collaboration with the Grupo de Investigación de Química Macromolecular (Labquimac) Research Group (, belonging to the Faculty of Science and Technology (FCT/ZTF) at the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU).
