Photo-curable functional composite for additive manufacturing

 

3D printing techniques have developed significantly over the last decades. Most of the inks used just fulfil the function of creating a desirable shape of 3D object. However, in the future it is expected that these inks will also have other functionalities, such as electrical, piezoresistivity, magnetic, or combination of them to make the objects more functional and responsive. Another important aspect is the use of solvents in direct ink writing and inkjet-printing, or heat in fused deposition modelling. However, the stereolithography technique is based on UV-inks, where not solvents/heat are necessary, which makes it more environmentally friendly by reducing VOC and energy consumption. However, the biocompatibility of these components today is still questionable. Currently, it is available inks with relatively low performance in terms of curing speed and functionality. Therefore, new UV-inks need to be developed to extent functionality, performance and improve their biocompatibility

 

The following techniques, instruments and facilities will be used:

 

Multidisciplinary approach including polymer processing and characterization, ink formulations and device integration.

 

The following tasks will be performed:

 

  1. Preparation and optimization of novel UV-based ink formulations.
  2. Fabrication and implementation of devices
  3. Morphological, structural, thermal, mechanical and functional characterization

 

BCMaterials offers a scholarship to master students for the master thesis to be done at BCMaterials, for a total amount of 600 EUR per month for up to 5 months, in collaboration with the Grupo de Investigación de Química Macromolecular (Labquimac) Research Group (https://www.ehu.eus/es/web/labquimac), belonging to the Faculty of Science and Technology (FCT/ZTF) at the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU).
