Flexible electroactive materials and devices based on renewable polymers


Materials based on natural resources are playing an increasing role toward the development of a more sustainable society based on a circular economy. In this regard, strong scientific and technological efforts are being carried out to replace traditional petroleum-based synthetic polymers by biopolymers. This would contribute to face the depletion of non-renewable fossil fuels and reducing the alarming 8 million tons of plastics that are discarded into the ocean annually (recently anticipated to increase by an order of magnitude by 2025). Fortunately, nature provides a wide range of renewable and easily available materials, where polysaccharides play a major role.


Therefore, in this project we propose to use different polysaccharides such as cellulose, chitin or starch to develop electrically active and mechanically flexible materials. Their properties would be tailored upon the introduction of nanofillers.These materials would be then integrated into devices.


The following techniques, instruments and facilities will be used:


Study of nanofillers properties, fabrication of devices such as flexible flat electroluminescent panels, medical image sensors, photovoltaics or electronic paper using printing and additive manufacturing technologies.


The following tasks will be performed:


  1. Synthesis and characterization of nanofillers.
  2. Ink formulation and characterization.
  3. Device fabrication and testing.


BCMaterials offers a scholarship to master students for the master thesis to be done at BCMaterials, for a total amount of 600 EUR per month for up to 5 months, in collaboration with the Product Design Laboratory – Departamento de Expresión Grafica y Proyectos de Ingeniería Research Group (http://www.ehu.eus/PDL/), belonging to the Faculty of Science and Technology (FCT/ZTF) at the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU).
