BCMaterials – Basque Center for Materials, Applications and Nanostructures is a research center included in the BERC’s (Basque Excellence Research Centers) network, devoted to generate knowledge on the new generation of materials, and turning this knowledge into (multi)functional solutions and devices for the benefit of society, is currently calling for a

to work on project

Establishment of an in vitro platform to quantify the immune response to biomaterials

The Biomaterials group at BCMaterials focuses on the investigation of the influence of the protein interface, i.e. the protein layer that is deposited on medical implants either voluntarily during the production of biomaterials or by their adsorption from the blood after implantation, on the reaction of the host’s stromal and immune cells. The ultimate goal of the group is to develop new bioengineered replacement materials that control protein deposition to promote optimal integration of the implanted materials into the host tissue.

Macrophages are among the first cells to contact biomaterials after implantation, and their response is central to the successful healing of the injury. With this in mind, the project will focus on the establishment of the experimental conditions to investigate the modulation of macrophage polarization in response to a number of biomaterial properties ranging from structural organization and chemical composition to biophysical properties.

The following techniques, instruments and facilities will be used:

Multidisciplinary approach involving cell culture, gene expression analysis, immunodetection and protein biochemistry to define the characteristics that favour a well-regulated macrophage response.

The following tasks will be performed:

  1. Introduction and training at lab.
  2. Development and characterization samples
  3. Analysis and discussion of results
