Advanced Manufacturing of Magnetocaloric Materials: Towards a Sustainable Refrigeration System
BCMaterials is currently seeking a highly motivated M.Sc. candidate to work in the fabrication and development of novel magnetocaloric materials utilizing revolutionary 2D-3D printing technologies. Magnetic refrigeration is a technology based on the magnetocaloric effect (MCE). It has a potential to substitute the conventional cooling systems due to its advantages, including a greater efficiency (60% of Carnot cycle compared to 30% for the gas-expansion-compression systems) since it is well-known that one of the challenges of modern society is to reduce the green-house effects and energy consumption avoiding losses during the cooling performance.
The M.Sc. project is focused on the development of novel compositions of magnetocaloric materials, especially, Heusler type magnetic shape memory alloys (MSMA), aiming to reduce the temperature hysteresis of martensitic transformation and increase of the accompanying magnetization jump. Magnetocaloric inks will also be developed.
The following techniques, instruments and facilities will be used:
The M.Sc. candidate will acquire hands-on experience in a wide variety of fabrication and characterization techniques, among which induction furnace melting, melt-spinning, for fabrication; powder preparation and ink-filament preparation with varied binders and solvents, for advanced manufacturing as 3D- or screen-printing. For characterization, X-ray diffraction, VSM-SQUID magnetometry, and magnetic field induced adiabatic temperature measurements are included.
The following tasks will be performed:
- Fabrication of MSMA with the desired compositions by induction furnace and subse-quent melt-spinning to get ribbons.
- Design and preparation of inks for stencils and screen-printing applications.
- Magnetic and structural characterization of ribbons and printed samples by means of vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM) and by X-ray diffraction, respectively.
- Direct measurement of the adiabatic temperature change as a function of the temperature and under different applied magnetic fields.
- Analysis of results and preparation of a Master’s Final Report.
BCMaterials offers a scholarship to master students for the master thesis to be done at BCMaterials, for a total amount of 600 EUR per month for up to 5 months, in collaboration with the Magnetism and Magnetic Materials Research Group Research Group (http://www.gmmmt.net/), belonging to the Faculty of Science and Technology (FCT/ZTF) at the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU).
