Adaptive and programmable functional materials

 

Adaptive/programmable materials represent one on the most ambitious trends in tailoring materials responses. Within this concept, material can be designed to modify functional property as a response to variations of the specific environment (i.e. varying surface charge with varying stiffness of the surrounding) or modify physical characteristics under a triggering signal (i.e. switch between electrical and conductive response under a thermal/magnetic variation). Different strategies, involving molecular modification, organic-inorganic hybrid materials, multilayered or more complex structures are being explored. Further, related approach pursues the development of “origami” like materials, recovering specific complex shapes after applying specific environmental stimuli. This project will focus on the development of hybrid multiresponsive structures strongly changing electrical characteristics under slight variations of surrounding media (pH, temp, pressure) for biomedical applications

 

The following techniques, instruments and facilities will be used:

 

Multidisciplinary approach including knowledge in micro/nanoparticles, polymer processing and characterization as well as implementation in biomedical and/or electronica’s solutions.

 

The following tasks will be performed:

 

  1. Development of hybrid multiresponsive structures
  2. Characterization test
  3. Implementation results

 

BCMaterials offers a scholarship to master students for the master thesis to be done at BCMaterials, for a total amount of 600 EUR per month for up to 5 months, in collaboration with the Grupo de investigación de quimica macromolecular Research Group (https://www.ehu.eus/es/web/labquimac/hasiera), belonging to the Faculty of Science and Technology (FCT/ZTF) at the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU).
