PEMFORM–Shape memory magnetic thin films for microdevices


Magnetic shape memory alloys are of great interest due to their magnetic, thermal and mechanical properties for actuators. The large density of stored energy is of especial interest, making these materials very competitive as thin films for MEMS applications. This project proposes to prepare NiMnGa type thin film alloys over silicon cantilevers and to study their actuation via temperature and magnetic field. Cantilevers are obtained through international collaborations and we aim at characterising the thin films atomically accessing the European large infrastructures in neutrons and sincotron.

By transferring this technology to the Basque industry,  currently only available in Germany, Japan and the States, we will contribute towards positioning them as reference at the forefront of this sector.
