GMR-DETECT–Emerging techniques in cancer diagnostics and therapy using magnetic nanodisks


Magnetic nanoparticle-based applications are emerging in the biomedical area due to their great potential to improve sensor sensibilities and localized therapies. The long-distance action of magnetic fields on magnetic materials provides a powerful tool to manipulate magnetic nanoparticles (MNP) loaded with cancer biomarkers, proteins, DNA, etc. Moreover, these MNP can be detected by magneto-resistance sensors, which exhibit much higher sensibility than conventional sensors. These emerging techniques may have a remarkable impact for an early stage detection of grave and lethal diseases.

This three year project investigates the potential of magnetic nanodisks for the detection of cancer biomarkers using giant magneto-resistance (GMR) sensors. In addition, a novel therapeutic technique, based on the magneto-mechanical action of nanodisks, will be also investigated in-vitro experiments with tumoral cells.
